ABC Wednesday - P is for Plastic

I have my "green" hat on today. Right in the middle of my ruminations about what to post for the letter P I came across an interesting YouTube video called "Plastic Plague". From National Geographic it is a short report on the damaging effects of plastic on our oceans and wildlife.
I know we all know this, but after viewing it, I suddenly wondered what I should do about this...

I could try my hand at "artificial" flowers...but I'm thinking that I would not be so good at it...

Any other ideas? If I can recycle my plastic bags and keep that part of my impact on the earth to a minimum maybe I can come up with some others, too. I've been carrying my own shopping bags for awhile now, so once this supply is gone - then my work will be done - for plastic bags anyway....
Happy Earth Day - every day.

Look for more interesting ideas and photos here at ABC Wednesday.

  1. Cut really really thin strips and start knitting! It might be the next 'in' thing!

  3. Good for you for now carrying your own bags!

  4. RuneE always has the best lines. I know a girl who knits plastic bags together. No idea how she does this, not a knitter but it's her way of recylcing.

  5. I carry canvas bags when I plan to shop, but those sudden thoughts of something I need that pop into my mind just as I'm passing Safeway mean that plastic bags continue to accumulate. Fortunately Safeway also collects the used bags to recycle.

Let's make every day Earth Day!

  6. This is a good post to make people aware of the need to use canvas bags. You could bring them back to the store for recycling...this, of course, does not take them out of circulation....

  7. Great project. There are so many uses for recycled plastic.

  8. Good post! I always feel that if we each do a little bit, things can improve. I've heard of knitting and crocheting the bags, but I've never tried.

  9. Isn't it terrible that paperbags aren't used any more?! Before the war we had no recycling problems: it was done automatically. There were rag-and-bone men and old-clothes men. Now we have containers for paper, clothes and bottles, but still nothing for plastic in my country.

  10. I read about plastic in the ocean and the danger to sealife, it is very sad. There is so much plastic in the shops but no I can think of no other use for it; still we will run out of oil at some point and then no more plastic.

  11. We used to travel from our island to the shops in an open boat with an outboard motor. On one occasion a piece of plastic became wrapped round our propeller and stopped the motor - quite unpleasant! Here in Ireland we have to pay a levy on any plastic carrier bag we buy in a shop. Many of us carry our own shopping bags again, just like in the old days.

    Thanks for participating.

  12. Those flowers look fun ... but if I did them, they'd just look like crumpled plastic carrier bags in a vase!

Good for you, carrying your own shopping bags! We do that, too.

What else can you do? Well, you can choose to buy things with less packaging, where there's a choice. The amount of 'security' packaging around goods these days is a disgrace.

Also see what you can find made from recycled and biodegradable plastic. You can even buy dog waste 'pick-up' bags of biodegradable plastic these days! :)
